Reading Tips for Preschool Families

At Central Jersey Enrichment Center, we believe that reading should be a joyful part of childhood. A few minutes of reading together each day can help children build language, imagination, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

You don’t need a special routine or expensive materials. Your voice, your time, and a favorite book are enough to get started.

Simple Ways to Make Reading Fun
  • Read together every day. Even 10–15 minutes can make a difference.
  • Let your child choose. Favorite books are wonderful—even when they want to hear the same story again and again!
  • Talk about the pictures. Ask, “What do you see?” or “What do you think will happen next?”
  • Make it fun. Use different voices, expressions, and sounds to bring the story to life.
  • Connect stories to everyday life. Point out letters, words, signs, colors, and objects you see together.
  • Follow your child’s interest. If they lose interest, it’s okay to take a break and try again later.
  • Make reading a special time. A few quiet minutes together can become one of your child’s favorite parts of the day.
Reading in English or Spanish? Both Are Welcome!

Children can enjoy stories and build language skills in English, Spanish, or both. Read in the language you are most comfortable speaking with your child. What matters most is sharing the joy of books together.
